I was born and raised in Houston, Texas, by a single mom who is still my hero. Before I became a lawyer I was a musician. But I was not a very good musician. At least, that’s what the consensus seemed to be. The consensus was “Kelly, we saw your performance last night, and we think you should probably be a lawyer.”
So I attended college at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and then law school at The University of Texas School of Law. While there, I began my criminal defense career in the school’s clinic. Before I had even graduated law school, I had already tried my first criminal case to a jury. And I liked it. The defendant there was a flamboyant local favorite charged with Public Intoxication, who made me argue that because he was wearing not one but two pairs of panty hose that night, he hadn’t been in any danger of freezing, and therefore was not guilty.
On graduation, I began practice in Austin and San Marcos, exclusively defending the citizen accused. I never worked as a prosecutor, or for any government agency. I much prefer to have those folks as my opposing counsel. The simple truth is that I am for the underdog. And I don’t like bullies. This work permits me to help the underdog and to stand up to bullies every day.
Criminal defense is the front line of constitutional law, the place where the freedom we treasure is made real. It’s sometimes gritty, but always lofty. The rights we fight for in court are the only things that make this country special. I am proud of that.
I live and work in San Marcos. Hays County is my home. From Dripping Springs and Wimberley to Kyle and Buda, I’d rather live and work here than anywhere in the world.
